Being a midwife would appear to be more of a calling than a profession; indeed, midwives have been attending expectant mothers, women giving birth and those who have recently given birth since time immemorial. Nowadays, though, the importance of the midwife is in decline, and it is increasingly the case that midwives are involved in the preparations for birth and the subsequent postnatal care, yet it would appear that their ministrations at an actual birth have now become anything but a matter of course. In her research, Prof. Dr. Marita Metz-Becker, an ethnologist at Philipps-Universität Marburg, examines the background to this development and investigates the history of birth cultures and midwives.

Wind in my hair
Original title: Wind in meinem Haar – Ferne Heimat Karatau
Documentary film, 44 min, 16:9
Germany 2016
Melitta Anselm travels to Karatau in Kazakhstan. It’s been 25 years since she left the country with her family and emigrated to Germany, the land of her ancestors. Now she returns for the first time. She wants to visit her father’s grave, to see her old house, to feel the soft wind of the steppe one more time. She gets back to a place that is closer to her heart than she ever realized. A documentary about a quest for roots and identity that tells a lot of the tragedy-ridden (Russian-) German history.
